Investigation of the effects of bulbous bow on the resistance of 9200 TEU container ship by CFD

Abstract: The bow’s shape and location have great effect on the ship resistance. Traditional bulbous bow design is carried through the model test. It takes a lot of time and effort. With the popularization and development of computer hardware, CFD (computational fluid dynamics) continues to make breakthroughs in theoretical research. Prediction accuracy of some CFD methods has already reached the considerable level of model test. In this paper, a 9200TEU container ship, which is developed by CIMC, is studied as an example. In the outset, by comparing the resistance results obtained by CFD method and calm water model test, the feasibility of numerical simulation method used in this paper is verified. Secondly, three kinds of container ship bulbous bows design have been built up according to the length, height and sectional area of bulbous bow. In the end, the relationship between ship resistance and bulbous bow geometric factors under different ship speeds has been respectively calculated by CFD method to provide necessary information for ship lines optimum design.
