摘要

Adsorption of metals by geomedia plays an important role in regulating a wide range of biogeochemical cycles and reactions. Despite decades of efforts, much remains unknown about the mechanisms of metal adsorption, and about the role adsorption plays in critical biogeochemical reactions, mainly because of the extreme heterogeneity of geomedia surfaces. This special volume results from a 20-year anniversary symposium entitled, "Adsorption of Metals by Geomedia III" that was held at the 2016 American Chemical Society spring meeting. This collection of review and research articles represents a sampling of recent progress in understanding the mechanisms and effects of metal adsorption reactions, using theoretical computational approaches, spectroscopic analyses, and benchtop experiments. The objective of putting together this special volume is to reflect on the progress that has been made recently and to foster future research in this area. Only by summarizing the progress that has been made over the past 10 years can we effectively determine the remaining questions that need to be answered in the next 10 years. We hope that the articles in this volume serve both of these purposes, and that interfacial surface geochemists of all ages are inspired to work on these interesting and important questions.
