摘要

Despite a high risk for serious side effects, sympathomimetics for local administration are available without a prescription and are well established on the German market. %26lt;br%26gt;We report on a 30-day-old girl who received 0.1 ml of xylometazoline 0.05 % solution 3 times a day. The next day, the girl was admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit because of vomiting, apnea and loss of consciousness. %26lt;br%26gt;Using mass spectrometry, high concentrations of xylometazoline and its metabolites were detected in the patient%26apos;s urine. Thus a clear relationship between the administration of xylometazoline and the clinical symptoms was demonstrated. %26lt;br%26gt;We would like to explicitly warn against using medicines which are, despite being available without prescription, potentially dangerous particularly for neonates and infants.
