Active control of unbalance response of rotor systems supported by tilting-pad gas bearings

This article establishes an optimal control model using piezoelectric actuators, proportional-derivative (PD) compensation, and gap sensors to control the vibration of rotor systems supported by tilting-pad gas bearings with active pads. The optimal control law between the voltage applied on the actuator and dynamic displacement of rotor is obtained by means of conventional optimal control theory. Using this active control model, the unbalance responses of rotor system are numerically controlled. Results show that the unbalance responses of system can be effectively suppressed by this optimal control system. This article provides a theoretical basis for further improving the stability of rotor systems supported by tilting-pad gas bearings.
