A 0.85-5.4 GHz 25-W GaN Power Amplifier

This letter presents the design, implementation, and measurement results for a 2.6-octave highly efficient power amplifier (HEPA). The power amplifier (PA) is designed by using a systematic approach based on source-pull/load-pull simulations and the application of an optimization algorithm. The measurement results show that, in the frequency band of 850 MHz to 5.4 GHz, the fabricated PA provides an output power greater than 43.5 dBm, a power-added efficiency of more than 45%, and a power gain of between 8 and 9.5 dB. Compared with the state-of-the-art HEPAs, the PA presented in this letter is shown to have a better performance in terms of output power and operating bandwidth.
