Diurnal feeding rhythm and feeding amount in larvae and juveniles of longtooth grouper Epinephelus bruneus and sevenband grouper E. septemfasciatus during seed production

To accumulate basic knowledge on the feeding characteristics of larvae and juveniles of longtooth grouper Epinephelus bruneus and sevenband grouper E. septemfasciatus during seed production, we examined the diurnal feeding rhythm for rotifers and feeding amounts of rotifers and Artemia in larvae and juveniles reared in a hatchery. Feeding was not observed under the dark condition in both species. The diurnal feeding rhythm of longtooth grouper changed from one peak at dusk to two peaks at dawn and dusk in accordance with the fish growth, whereas sevenband grouper showed one peak pattern throughout the larval stage. The daily food consumption rates of larvae for rotifers and Artemia were estimated to be 52-120% and 41-148% for longtooth grouper and 16-194% and 39-136% for sevenband grouper, respectively. This study could assist the intentional cultivation of rotifer and Artemia during seed production of the longtooth grouper and sevenband grouper.
