Deceleration measurement for penetration into steel target

Deceleration measurement is both very important and very difficult for the research on the penetration. This paper presents an ultra-high g deceleration measurement experiment. In the experiment penetration occurs while a tungsten alloy projectile with velocity of 573m/s impacts a 50-mm-thick steel target. Numerical simulation utilizing ANSYS/LS_DYNA is carried out firstly to estimate the deceleration value and its duration time, and followed by a detailed description to the design of the measurement device. Experiment results show that more than 145,000g deceleration value is measured. The results are consistent with the simulation ones. However, compared to the theoretical analysis result of a previously published penetration model, the experiment result shows some disparities.
