A long way to elucidate molecular mechanisms leading to uranium toxicity The elucidation of the mechanisms of metal toxicity necessitates the identification of its proteic targets. To date, the prediction of the sites enabling metal fixation is still impossible. As a consequence, the determination ex nihilo of metal targets requires the implementation of separation techniques together with an identification using both molecular and elemental mass spectrometry. But this approach remains insufficient, and the precise determination of affinity constants towards a metal is essential for the description of the proteins which really carry the metal throughout the organism. This is exemplified through the uranium case.
