Palladium catalyzed additions of terminal alkynes to alkynoates can lead from preferential to exclusive C-C bond formation at the alpha -carbon and, in the case of ethyl 3-dimethylphenylsilylpropiolate. complete selectivity for alpha -attack, an unprecedented regioselectivity that requires revision of the earlier assignment of regioselectivity.
