Names of Assam tea: Their priority, typification and nomenclatural notes

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Various names have been used for Assam tea and they are typified here. The currently widely used name, <jats:italic>Camellia sinensis</jats:italic> var. <jats:italic>assamica</jats:italic>, is a combination based on <jats:italic>Thea viridis</jats:italic> var. <jats:italic>assamica</jats:italic>, not “<jats:italic>T. assamica</jats:italic>” because the latter was never validly published. Two earlier published names, <jats:italic>C. theifera</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>T. cochinchinensis</jats:italic>, and two later ones, <jats:italic>C. tenuistipa</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>T. yersinii</jats:italic>, may represent the same taxon and are treated as synonyms of <jats:italic>T. viridis</jats:italic> var. assamica because the latter has priority at the rank of variety and therefore is the correct name for Assam tea.</jats:p>
