Analysis and simulation of strip transverse buckling in CAPL

The occurrence of transverse buckling, he commonly called "heating-buckling", in a strip traveling through a continuous annealing production line (CAPL) is analyzed. This phenomenon may cause a strip break inducing a production shutdown of at least a day. When the induced compressive stress resulting from non uniform longitudinal stretching in the strip exceeds a critical buckling stress in the CAPL, transverse buckling will occur. The MARC software was used with a geometrical non-linear buckling analysis method. The rules and acting mechanisms of the major factors, such as roll profile, flatness, strip size, transverse distribution of temperature, welding seam and strip track-off have been investigated. The average hour output was increased by 5.89% through a series of technical developments.
