An approach to determination of the water deficit in the region of Libertador General Bernardo O%26apos;Higgins, Chile, from MODIS images and meteorological data

Two methods for the determination of hydric deficit in the Region del Libertador Bernardo O%26apos;Higgins, Chile are compared. Using land surface temperature and vegetation indices from MODIS satellite images and air temperature from meteorological records, the Water Deficit Index (WDI) and the Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) are calculated and applied in the study area. The values obtained for two specific dates in spring and summer are evaluated and spatial and temporal similarities and differences between them are measured both in magnitude of hydric deficit (or dryness) and in their tendencies. Regarding this, only small differences were detected. Finally, the potential and cautions in the use of these indices are discussed.
