Diaspore germination and initial growth of Cordia trichotoma (Vell.) Arrab. ex Steud (Boraginaceae)

Cordia trichotoma (Veil.) Arrab. ex Steud, locally known as "louro-pardo", is considered a pioneer plant, important for its timber and for the regeneration of degraded areas. Diaspores of this species were collected from trees during autumn, winter and spring. After laboratory procedures, they were kept in germination under 20, 25 and 30 degrees C, and a photoperiod of 12 hours or continuously in a dark chamber. The analysis of seedlings, maintained in a greenhouse, was undertaken on 60, 90 and 120 days after transplanting (DAT). A higher percentage of germination and index of germination speed was observed under 20 degrees C and a 12 h photoperiod. The seedlings have a phaneroepigeal-foliaceous feature, with photosynthetic leaf-like cotyledons and persisting until 60 DAT. There was no significant difference in relation to growth parameters among the analyses performed at 90 and 120 DAT. However, total dry mass was higher at 120 DAT.
