A Spiking Neural System Based on DNA Strand Displacement

摘要

Neural like devices are investigated with the aim to perform computational functions of biological or artificial neurons. In recent years, classes of neural like spiking, liquid state systems have been theoretically designed to perform computational functions, which are inspired by the way of neurons communicate with each other by electronic impulse. But due to the "poor" biological conditions to control biological neurons, no result has been reported about using biological systems to mimic a spiking neuron computing system in vitro. In this work, we use DNA strand displacement technology to simulate the spiking and liquid state behavior of neurons, and achieve basic logic computation including AND, OR, NAND and NOT gates in vitro. The experimental results confirm that our spiking neuron system is correct and feasible, which provide a new direction or method to construct nanoscale bio-inspired logic gates with neurons' spiking behavior, as well as a new way to construct nano-scale logic circuits.
