Bakers' yeast (Saccharomyces cereuisiae) efficiently catalyzes the three-component Biginelli reaction of aldehydes, (3-keto esters, and urea/thiourea to form 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones in good to excellent yields.
