摘要

A strategy is presented for optimizing spare part storage for a deployable asset for several different patrol durations based on a Poisson-distribution failure model. Solutions based on simulated data demonstrates that a policy without consideration for metrics such as mean time between failure, storage cost, and mission vitality impact is excessive in its approach toward onboard storage, resulting in excessive spare parts being carried. The reliance on a heuristic approach may result in an excess of 49% spare parts storage under typical contemporary operating conditions. Conversely, a policy that is too lean, risks degrading mission capabilities by allowing a shortage of 31% in spare parts. The primary assumption is a mean time between failure frequency of Poisson parameter, lambda. The paper proposes that an optimal value exists between the extremes wherein cost reduction in spare parts for one deployable unit may result in the creation of assets for application towards other critical assets. We use a 90% confidence interval for part failure, to find a balance between cost savings and mission readiness that mimics and exceeds the conventional heuristic approach.
