Degree 5 Invariant of E-8

We give a formula for the recently discovered degree 5 cohomological invariant of some groups of type E-8 and use this formula to give a precise interpretation of Serre's "funny-looking statement" in terms of embeddings of finite subgroups in the split E-8.
