摘要

The international construction industry has gained a rapid growth during the past decades. The contracting revenue of the top 250 international contractors reached US$1430.8 billion in 2014, of which more than one third was derived from the overseas market. However, there are significant challenges associated with the international construction market. Included is over competition in some regional markets, which is detrimental to the international contractors' business. Therefore, international contractors are in urgent need of accurate understanding of the international construction market and competition situation. Based on the enterprise niche theory, indicators for niche width and niche overlap of international contractors are defined in this paper. Consequently, measurement methods were proposed to describe the diversification and utilization of international market resources, as well as the similarity of the international target market and the level of competitiveness among contractors. The statistics on contracting revenue of the top 250/225 international contractors published by Engineering News-Record (ENR) in the past five years were critically analyzed. Consequently, the niches of international contractors from 13 main countries were measured. Results show that niche widths of international contractors vary according to geography and product dimension. All these countries can be divided into four competitive groups according to the calculation of niche overlap and clustering analysis. The model proposed in this study introduces new insights into the theories of enterprise niche. Similarly, it provides a valuable reference for examining characteristics and patterns of competition within the international construction contracting market.
