Recently, rapid progress has been achieved in the field of membrane fouling. But the research of membrane fouling is still focused on membrane operating parameters. There is no research about the micro mechanism of membrane cake layer. Fractal theory offers a new approach to study membrane fouling, which is helpful to the analysis of the micro structure of cake layer. A critical review on the potential application of fractal theory in membrane fouling research is given.
