Decarbonylation of ethanol to methane, carbon monoxide and hydrogen by a [PNP]Ir complex

The putative three-coordinate Ir(I) PNP(Pri) (PNP(Pri) = [N{2-P(CHMe(2))(2)-4-MeC(6)H(3)}(2)](-)) pincer complex decarbonylates ethanol to yield methane, hydrogen and [PNP(Pri)]Ir(CO). The mechanism involves the isolable trans-[PNP(Pri)]Ir(H)(Me)(CO), which is susceptible to photochemical reductive elimination of methane.
