In 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami destroyed fishery harbour sectors in Sri Lanka, including shore facilities and supportive services. In post tsunami phase, fishery harbours were rehabilitated. Even though there were studies to assess the rehabilitation level of several sectors, none was related to fishery harbour sector. Therefore, it is important to assess the rehabilitation level of fishery harbours to increase the efficiencies of existing harbours and future rehabilitation programs. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate the present conditions of rehabilitated fishery harbours under the categories, such as harbour structures, supportive services, harbour environment and preparedness for the future tsunamis. To gather information, field survey was conducted. Fishermen survey, key informants surveys and field observations were carried out. On the basis of our analysis, we concluded that fishery harbour rehabilitation was at a satisfactory level. However, as a result of lack of coordination among donor parties, resource over allocation was identified in some cases. Absence of a proper waste disposal system was also identified as a common problem. Further, key problems of some harbours, such as sand accumulation and high wave agitations, were not addressed under the rehabilitation programs.
