A planar optical waveguide sensor for hydrogen sulfide detection

A planar optical waveguide (OWG) sensor is fabricated by coating a thionine dye-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film over a single-mode potassium ion (K+) exchanged glass OWG. In the presence of H,S gas, the color of the thionine-PVA film changed from violet to colorless; this resulted in a decrease in the evanescent absorbance of the film. This sensor exhibits a good linear response to hydrogen sulfide gas in the range of 100 ppb-40 ppm (R = 0.99667) with a rapid response (< 2 s) and good reversibility. The present sensor is also characterized by low cost, simple structure, and easy fabrication.
