摘要

This paper examines the lexical change in American English regarding high frequency words, vocabulary richness and word length. The corpora used are the BROWN Corpus and two sets of samples randomly drawn from the American National Corpus (ANC, second release), each totalling 1,000,000 words. The result shows that, in 40 years, 91 of the top 100 words of BROWN still remain in the top 100 words of either ANC1, ANC2 (the two sets of samples from ANC), or both. However, significant changes have taken place in vocabulary richness and word length.
