摘要

Variety of modem economic activities leads to wastewater treatment plants receiving not only well-known waste substances, determination of which is required by the legislation, but also compounds of unknown composition and properties, their mixtures and metabolism products. Therefore, it is important to ask a question how modem treatment plants cope with removal of a wide range of compounds and what impact treated sewage may have on a receiver, especially the marine ecosystem. Studies on feasibility of Microtox (R) bioassay application to assessment of the selected wastewater treatment plant effectiveness were an attempt to address this question. The analyzed material were sewage samples collected at subsequent stages of treatment as well as at the collector outlet to the sea. The studies involved assessment of the effect of mechanical-biological sewage treatment on sewage toxicity to Vibrio fischeri. In addition, effect of pH and turbidity on wastewater toxicity was determined. Microtox (R) test demonstrated that the analyzed sewage treatment technology (Bardenpho) was highly effective in removal of toxic compounds entering the sewer system from various sources. Effluent discharged to the sea showed no toxic effect against Vibrio fischeri.
