摘要

Differing from the wide applications of characteristic modes (CMs) in radiation problems, this work focuses on the scattering decomposition and control for fully dielectric-coated perfectly electric conducting (PEC) bodies using the CM theory. Based on the orthogonal current basis and far-field basis obtained from the CM analysis, physically induced currents and scattering from fully dielectric-coated PEC bodies can be decomposed into linearly weighted CMs. To realize the decomposition, two types of modal decomposition formulations are proposed to quickly calculate the modal weighted coefficients associated with each mode. The benefits of this approach are twofold: 1) it reveals the underlying scattering mechanism by investigating the contribution from each mode to the total scattering based on a computationally efficient scattering decomposition process; and 2) the modal contribution and modal behavior provide valuable information to guide systematic scattering control. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy in scattering computation and practical applications in scattering control of the proposed approach.
