摘要

We present new data on the distribution, morphology and conservation status of a rare species of coral snake, Micrurus silviae, recently described with few specimens. We analyzed 20 additional specimens from 12 localities in Argentina, increasing its distribution 320 km westward and filling gaps in the known distribution between Brazil and Paraguay. The species inhabits savannas of the Campos District, a transitional area between the Paranaense, Chaco, Espinal and Pampas phytogeographic provinces. We discussed diagnostic features that can be differentiated from 6 sympatric species of the genus. Its small area of occupation coupled with a continuing decline in its extent and quality of habitat, caused by afforestation with pines, and flooding caused by dams and rice crops, support its inclusion as endangered species in Argentina.
