So far, the spiral case of conventional reaction turbines was designed to distribute the uniform through flow circumferentially from the nose to the end of stay vanes. As a result, the flow circulation γ (=RV u) at the stay vane inlet was not sufficiently uniform circumferentially, and axi-asymmetric flow was supplied toward guide vanes and runner. Since the high-head pump-turbine must be operated under the off-designed condition, the axi-asymmetric flow may amplify the unsteady hydraulic performances such as S-shape characteristics and the negative gradient H-Q curve, etc. The paper proposed how to design the advanced spiral case with stay vanes for high-head pump-turbine in order to supply the exactly uniform axi-symmetric flow toward runner.
