Application of dual-modality contrast agent for medical image registration

In this paper, dual-modality contrast agent can not only enhance contrast of Ultrasound Image (US), but can also be used as a contrast agent of Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI). With the help of dual-modality contrast agent, a new registration algorithm between US and MRI is introduced. To enhance the most important information of interest, the above dual-modality contrast agent was used in both ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging process. After that, a improved affine transformation model between US and MRI was constructed, and both physical spatial transformation and intensity variation between the two modality images have been taken into consideration. The proposed algorithm combined with the dual-modality contrast agent contends with larger deformation, and performs well not only for local deformation but also for global deformation. The comparison experiments also demonstrated that US-MRI registration using the above-mentioned dual-modality contrast agent might be a promising algorithm for obtaining more precise image information.
