Attenuation of electromagnetic waves by vegetation canopies

An analytical review of the studies of EM wave attenuation by vegetation canopies in the frequency range from 100 to 10000 MHz is presented. The object of investigation is briefly described, and typical biometric parameters of different types of vegetation canopies are specified. Electrodynamical models representing a vegetation canopy as a continuous medium and as a set of scatterers are considered, and the limits of validity of these models are determined. Theoretical models describing the dielectric properties of plant elements are discussed along with the corresponding experimental data. Relationship between the EM wave attenuation and the biometric parameters of vegetation is determined. Methods of measuring the EM wave attenuation by vel-elation canopies are reviewed, and data of such measurements are analyzed. Lines of further investigation in this field of research are indicated.
