SORPTION OF MALACHITE GREEN FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS ONTO GREEK RAW DIASPORIC BAUXITE

Greek raw bauxite from Klisoura mine (prefecture unit of Fokida, Central Greece) has been used for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. The batch type experiments were conducted with 10 ml of solution, at pH = pH(ZPC)= 6.7, contact time 1 h and with various initial adsorbent quantities. Malachite green concentrations ranged from 10 to 40 mg/l. At initial concentration of malachite green 40 mg/l, raw bauxite dosage 0.02 g and at 298 K, its adsorption capacity was found to be q(t) 8.61 mg/g, whereas at 323 K q(t)= 15.57 mg/g. This adsorption capacity is comparable with other cheap but non-conventional adsorbents. For contact time 1 h the adsorption process did not reach completion. The heat content of the adsorption process of malachite green onto raw bauxite was calculated by running the experiment at 298, 313 and 323 K; it was found to be Delta H=27.11 kJ/mol, thus endothermic.
