Adaptive Amplitude and Delay Control for Stereophonic Reproduction that Is Robust against Listener Position Variations

Stereophonic reproduction is widely used to present audio information to listeners and to control sound image positions using amplitude panning in audio-visual systems and audio systems. However, with stereophonic reproduction, sound images are localized correctly only when a listener is located in a small listening position, a so-called sweet spot. This study was undertaken to develop a stereophonic reproduction system that provides precise sound image localization even to a listener who is not at the sweet spot. We propose a stereophonic reproduction system that detects a listener's position in a contactless manner and that controls the amplitude ratio and delay between left and right loudspeaker signals adaptively with respect to the listener's position, thereby engendering accurate sound image localization irrespective of the listener's position. Results of subjective experiments demonstrate that sound images presented using the proposed method are localized more accurately than with the conventional method, even when the listener is not located at the sweet spot.
