A blind digital background calibration for all-digital VCO-based ADC

A new blind digital background calibration for nonlinearity compensation of voltage-controlled oscillator based analog-to-digital converter is proposed in this letter. The proposed technique is blind and does not require the injection of an additional calibration signal. It takes advantage of the fact that the in-band and the out-of-band distortions have the same origin. By cancelling the out-of-band distortions, in-band distortions can also be removed. This new technique draws support from the orthogonal polynomials least mean square (LMS) algorithm to improve the computational efficiency. Finally, the proposed technique improves the signal-to-noise ratio by more than 40 dB after convergence of the LMS algorithm.
