摘要

The recomentions of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) are applied to the detection of operational risks (OpR) in enterprises of the electricity sector, in order to establish its exposure to this kind of financial risk. Initially, it is shown how Venezuela can have OpR sources that can impact at high levels in the international markets, as can be established from the leading indicators of risk rating agencies. Subsequently, in the electricity sector of Venezuela the subsidiary Corpoelec-EDELCA is detected as the enterprise estimated to suffer the greatest incidence of OpR in the National Interconnected System (NIS) of the country. This fact is based on the production of the company (more than 60% of the electric energy consumed in Venezuela) as well as in parts of Brazil and Colombia, besides having a wide network for electricity transmission and distribution. Having surveyed the Corpoelec-EDELCA staff and implemented the 80/20 Pareto%26apos;s principle, it was concluded that the hydroelectric power station %26apos;Simon Bolivar%26apos; (Guri plant) is the main source of OpR in the Venezuelan electricity sector. Finally, some OpR sources are established in the referred company as obtained from historical data, setting the basis for ad-hoc studies inside this organization with the aim of mitigating its incidence in the electrical, industrial and social sectors in Venezuela.
