Microstructure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe75Si20M5 (M = Al, B, Cr) powders

Nanocrystalline Fe75Si20M5 (M = Al, B and Cr) powders were synthesized by mechanical alloying in a planetary ball mill from high purity elemental powders. Evolution of non-equilibrium solid solutions of alpha-Fe[Si,(Al, B, Cr)] with a nanocrystalline structure was accompanied by the introduction of a large number of dislocation defects in the course of the milling process. Fe sites get substituted by Si and M (M = Al, B, Cr) atoms during the milling process. The structural change and the resulting disorder are reflected in the changes in the lattice parameter and average magnetic moment of the powders milled for various time periods. The effective magnetic anisotropy increases linearly with the milling time. All increase in coercivity with increasing milling time was observed which could be attributed to the introduction of dislocations and the reduction in the powder particle size during milling. The presence of dislocations and grain boundaries increases the possibility ofdornain wall pinning.
