摘要

Purpose of review
This review presents the most up-to-date information regarding available methods, safety, efficacy, and availability of emergency contraception for adolescents.
Recent findings
Recent reanalysis suggests that previously reported efficacy rates for the levonorgestrel-only method emergency contraception were probably overestimated. A newer and more efficacious method of emergency contraception, ulipristal acetate, was FDA approved in August 2010.
Summary
Emergency contraception provides young women with an opportunity to prevent pregnancy in the event of unprotected sexual intercourse. Several dedicated products are available commercially in the USA with varying efficacy rates. Barriers, including cost and accessing emergency contraception within the designated time frame, often prevent use among young women.
