An n x n sign pattern matrix has entries in {1, -1, 0}. This paper surveys the following problems concerning the bases of sign pattern matrices: base and base set of sign pattern matrices; the generalizations of the base of sign pattern matrices; other indices of sign pattern matrices. Several open problems are identified.
