Antimicrobial characteristic and mechanism of konjac glucomannan modified with N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate

摘要

A previous study in the authors'; laboratory showed that KGM-g-DMAE-BC, a derivative of the natural product konjac glucomannan, has antimicrobial activity. However, the mechanism was not investigated. In the Study described in this article, the authors used a quantitative suspension test to show a rapid adsorption of E. coli on the surface of KOM-g-DMBC. Further experiments using the TTC test proved that E. coli absorbed onto KGM-g-DMBC were killed. The test of integrity of bacterial membrane demonstrated that DNA and RNA existed in the Solution. It was concluded that KGM-g-DMAE-BC can absorb E. coli to its surface and produce its bactericidal effects by its quaternary ammonium.
