摘要

UV radiation is known to deteriorate the tensile strength of epoxy based nanocomposites over time. In this study two nanopowders, ceria (CeO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO), were used in different proportions in attempt to identify the ratio which is most successful at maintaining the initial performance of the nanocomposite. All samples were subjected to varying durations of UV radiation and the change of their colour was noted. The results show the best synergetic effect of the CeO2 and ZnO to be in the proportion of 1 : 4. Although CeO2/ZnO fine additives in other applications are reported as possessing high transparency in visible region, it seems to be different in the current application. Dramatic change in colour is observed under UV treatment.
