New Methods for Analysis of Diffusible Hydrogen in High-Strength Steels

In the last years the use of high strength steels with tensile strengths up to 2000 MPa increased in technical applications such as the automotive industry. In order to prevent a hydrogen induced degradation of the mechanical properties and a potential material failure due to delayed cracking, the critical hydrogen concentrations and the critical loads for these steels have to be known. Since the delayed cracking of high strength steels under tensile loads or stresses requires only small diffusible hydrogen concentrations, an accurate hydrogen measurement technique has to be employed. The technique has to allow the determination of the diffusible hydrogen content with a high repeatability and a sufficient accuracy for concentrations below 0,1 ppm, regardless of the total hydrogen content. In this article a hydrogen analyzing technique for the determination of the diffusible hydrogen concentrations in steels (Hydrogen Collecting Analysis - HCA) as well as an electrochemical technique for a local hydrogen determination are described.
