摘要

In the oncological practice, brain metastases often develop in patients with lung and breast cancer or malignant melanomas (in all age groups) and are more common than primary brain tumors. They might cause considerable consequences both with regard to survival, activities of daily living and quality of life of affected patients. Nowadays, more treatment options are available than ever before. It is therefore important to discuss these in close multidisciplinary collaboration and to also consider the extent of extracranial disease and available systemic treatment options. Several established radiation treatment options can be used aiming at palliation and/or durable local control. The latter might translate into better survival outcomes than those obtained in the past. Currently, innovative methods of selective avoidance of healthy structures are being explored, which might contribute to maintenance of a good quality of life.
