A Holographic Antenna Based on Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons

For the conventional holographic antennas, an arbitrary beam direction can be always achieved by changing the hologram, while the reference wave (RW) cannot be controlled. This letter presents a novel holographic antenna, in which the RW is adjusted to have varied phase constants for different azimuth angle phi, realizing a tilted beam while hologram pattern remains concentric. A detailed theoretic explanation on the new approach is given. It is proposed from a new perspective, different from the conventional approach, exhibiting improved gain due to symmetric disturbance in all the directions. The RW is guided by the spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) transmission line, and the control of phase constant is implemented by changing the serrated stub length of the SSPPs. In addition, a new approach to realize unidirectional radiation is also developed by simply using splitted substrate. The novel holographic antenna is fabricated and measured to verify the performance.
