Droplet Size and Velocity Measurements of a Water Spray Impinging on a Flat Plate

This work presents an experimental study of water spray as it impinges on the flat endplate of a circle. The effect of the spray exit velocity and Weber number on spray segregation are investigated. An optical image system was used to quantify the droplet size and distribution. LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) measurements were used to characterize the local velocity /and velocity fluctuation distribution from a commercial available nozzle in both axial and radial directions. It is found that Sauter mean diameter (SMD or d(32)) decreases as the spray exit velocity increases and as the spray proceeds further downstream as well. A correlation of d(32) with the relevant parameters was made. Furthermore, the radial velocities are found to be the largest at the outer edges of the spray, and they continuously decrease across the spray toward the spray axis; while the corresponding axial velocity is the maximum there, which are in good agreement with those of previous studies. Finally, it is found that the measured dimensionless impact velocity on the spray exit Weber number Wed; is not apparent.
