A methodology for modeling a distance protection relay in a real-time digital simulator is proposed. The relay model includes the main functionalities of digital relay architecture, the mho and quadrilateral distance protection elements and the fault diagnosis. The accuracy of both tripping and diagnosis processes of the proposed model were compared with the results obtained from the simulator's distance relay model and from a real digital relay for different fault scenarios.
