The synthesis of Mo-12Si-8.5B multiphase alloys was attempted by spark plasma sintering with arc-melting processed powder and mixed substance powder, respectively. The high dense mechanical alloys with alpha-Mo, Mo3Si and Mo5SiB2 were obtained by optimizing the SPS sintering temperature. The phase structure and microstructure of alloys were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The three-phase content and microstructure of alloys were affected by different raw material powder. The fracture toughness of various alloys at different temperatures was measured by single edge notched beam method. In the processing condition of the SPS sintering temperature of 1500 degrees C, holding pressure of 40 MPa and holding time of 5 min, the fracture toughness of the arc-melting powders derived alloys and the mixed substance powders derived alloys was 10.7 MPa.m(1/2) and 11.2 MPa.m(1/2), separately.
