Analysis of the Impact of redundancy on Reliable Broadcasting in MANETs

Broadcasting is inherently unreliable as a data transfer method because there are no other reliable mechanisms, such as acknowledgements and retransmission, for broadcasting at the MAC layer. In MANETs, several solutions to this problem use an in-built recovery process to overcome unreliable broadcasting. When using a recovery process, it is important to balance the trade-offs between additional redundancy and increased reliability. For example, broadcasting for MANETs minimizes energy consumption while providing reliability simultaneously.
In an effort to strike a balance between minimal energy consumption and increased reliability, we study such trade-offs between energy consumption and reliability of broadcasting with a recovery process in MANETs. Through the energy consumption model of MANET broadcasting, we investigate the impact of redundancy and derive optimal redundancy in terms of energy efficiency. We also present a reliable broadcasting algorithm that can adjust the redundancy dynamically according to different network conditions. We then demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm through simulations.
