摘要

Efforts in modern continuous casting have been directed towards the increase in the casting speed with high quality cast products. The maximum casting speed of the newly revamped caster in Gwangyang was targeted as 2.7m/min, and various technologies have recently been developed. It was confirmed that the newly designed caster was able to produce more than 3.5 million tons of slabs per year. The surface quality of the slabs was guaranteed under the high speed casting condition by adequate control of the mold level. The use of the braking mode in the movable multi-mode electromagnetic system was found effective to control the meniscus flatness. The surface quality of slabs was improved by implementing various technologies such as the mold level control, the Ar purging and the intensive cooling. The internal quality was improved by using the conventional soft reduction technology. The rejection ratio of heavy plates was reduced substantially by the application of the optimized soft reduction. A new slab quality prediction system was also found helpful for the quality improvement. Center segregation and porosity were proved to be further reduced by applying a newly developed heavy reduction technique. An innovative near-net shape casting technology developed by POSCO is the poStrip (R) process. A demonstration plant was constructed to verify the commercial viability of the process in terms of both quality and productivity of stainless steel strips. Austenitic stainless steel strips processed by this technology were demonstrated to be equivalent in mechanical properties to the conventional products.
