The cooperative principle which is closely related to people’s lives and the politeness principle which plays an impor-tant role in daily communication,are complementary.Using those principles,this paper analyzes four dialogues from the Americancomedy Seinfeld and finds that violating the cooperative and obeying the politeness principles with purpose and consciousness area method of creating verbal humor.The use of the two principles in that manner evidences the speakers’communicative compe-tence.This paper concludes that context is the basis for a true understanding of verbal humor.
