By a laser ultrasonic technique, the acousto-elastic coefficient of Rayleigh wave for a structural steel is determined and the residual stresses in a butt-welded plate is evaluated. The acousto-elastic coefficient of Rayleigh wave in the structural steel -0.22 X 10(-5)[MPa](-1) is in good agreement with that obtained by use of two knife-edge contact piezoelectric transducers. The estimated residual stress distribution in the butt-welded plate is reasonable.
