The large cross-section conductors can reduce power losses of transmission line and save energy and resources effectively when they are applied in ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission line with long distance and high load. In the construction of transmission line, the type selection of large cross-section conductors is a key issue related to the cost of engineering construction and subsequent operation and maintenance. One of the mature type selection schemes of large cross-section conductors in technical level is aluminium conductor steel reinforced, the other is profile conductor, including steel reinforced and aluminium alloy reinforced. The price of conductors, the investment of towers and the machining and construction difficulty of conductors should be comprehensively considered during scheme optimization. In this paper, the application feasibility of two selection schemes was compared as a starting point, and the manufacturing capability of selected conductors and their adaptability on construction machines and tools were mainly analyzed. Through comparison of the electrical properties, mechanical properties and economy of selected conductors, it is suggested that the large cross-section conductors at 1520 mm(2) class can be applied in +/- 800 kV DC transmission line with the capacity of 9600 MW or 10000 MW (corresponding current is 6000 A or 6250 A), and the best selection scheme in technical economy is 6x1520 mm(2) large cross-section conductors.
