An acceleration compensation smoothing approach for communicating in DSRC-based CACC system

Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) makes reliable and efficient communication between two vehicles. Aiming to keep vehicles safe and comfortable, Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) system, which can achieve cooperative driving autonomously by exchanging data using DSRC, has a high requirement for accuracy and real-timing of data. But considering that the physical quantity measured by sensors is never accurate enough and the delay is unavoidable, we cannot take other vehicles' data as the input for CACC system immediately. This paper proposes a novel acceleration compensation smoothing (ACS) approach to adapt the data for the requirement of CACC system. We design a 2-order IIR filter to enhance the accuracy of data and improve the filter with an acceleration compensation function to reduce the bad influence of delay. Simulation result shows that the precision rate of the data is increased by about 10%, and the comfort and the smoothing can be improved by up to 84%. This approach can also be used as an important technique to design other DSRC-based applications in the future.
